New Tech In Education

There is tons of new technology in the world that we do not use for education.
Some examples include:
Cell Phones, Ipods, and Blackberries.
Here is an article from 2004. Over 2 years later, how much farther have we gotten?

What ideas do you have?

So what else are students using their cell phones for besides retrieving homework assignments? Students could get these by copying them off the board or getting them from a home computer. I guess having the assignments accessible by cell phone is good, but what else could they use the phones for. These things are so much more powerful than the early computers were and we don't have to buy them.

I am apprehensive about using cell phones. Text messaging during class is bad enough and they are currently forbidden in most classrooms! Here is a question I do not want to ask: So what if students are text messaging? If students today are able to effectively multi-task, and text message while getting work done, then what's the problem? I guess my only reply back is that if students are able to multi-task this well, then we need to up the anti in the classroom and give more challenging assignments.

Also, what about poor students who do not have cell phones, or those not able to afford web-accessible cell phones? What kind of prejudices will this create? Public education, at least, is supposed to be free to all students. There are already violations all over the map from "lab donations", to PE uniforms, to art supplies, to social events. What will happen when we start requiring cell phones?
